Today’s Word from Rev. David Bieniek…

The blue-green waters of Puget Sound seem to stretch on forever some days. There is life out here. We learn of the amazing beauty and diversity under these waters in so many ways – TV and radio shows, podcasts and books, and, when we are blessed, personal experience.

In this season, have you ever wondered, “Where are the whales? Will I get a glimpse this year?” Friends report seeing them, and yet nothing breaks the surface for me to see – other than the whitecaps that are stirred up by the wind blowing over the water.

Yet there is an awareness that goes beyond the actual sighting of a whale. Even when we don’t see them, we know they are there. Just knowing that they are out there is enough. It reminds us that even when the Sacred is not seen, it is still present. The belief is, even when it is darkest and hardest to believe in the goodness of Creation, that is the most important time to believe.

The old saying goes, “It is darkest before the dawn.” It seems as if we are getting closer and closer to dawn; it seems to be darker and darker. So many things seem to be going wrong, but the world continues to move forward. We shelter in place, and trade hugs for calls and messages. We watch the numbers of people who suffer from a pandemic increase daily. As we wonder when this will end, we may wonder, “Is there still hope?”

Absolutely! This world is moving toward a new reality, which may not be recognized by past generations. Keep the hope, keep watching for the whales. They are there. And when the future dawns, and the spout of life is seen above the waves, this world will be different, and the darkness will give way to light.
