Today’s Word from Pastor Jim…
“My soul waits for the Lord more than watchmen for the morning, more than watchmen for the morning.” Psalm 130:6
Thousands of years ago, cities like Jericho, Jerusalem, and Megiddo had walls to protect the inhabitants from the very real threat of invasion. One never knew when the Canaanites, Philistines, Babylonians, Assyrians or Egyptians might launch a surprise attack. Watchmen would be stationed in tall towers; they would scan the horizon for any sign of impending danger. If the watchmen observed smoke or dust, or any movement, they would sound the alarm and the defense forces would go on high alert.
Those who kept watch at night had a particularly dangerous and daunting task. The watchmen had to stay awake and focused throughout the night. The very safety of the city depended on it. There were no electric lights, and short of tracking the moon and stars, there was no way to mark time. The night was dark and cold, and eerily quiet.
Through long hours, the watchmen would stare into the darkness, one hand firmly grasping a bow, the other hand ready to reach for arrows. Usually, nothing happened as tension and boredom took turns ruling the kingdom on their minds. They longed for the first sight of the sunrise. They waited for the light, light that would signal an end to their watch.
“My soul waits for the Lord, more than watchmen for the morning, more than watchmen for the morning.”
Our souls long for relief from the loneliness of pandemic. We yearn for a time of reunion; the days pass slowly as we experience more than our share of tension and boredom. We wait for the promised end of this season of isolation. We wait with little to mark the days, with no certain outcome, and no definite conclusion.
“My soul waits for the Lord, more than watchmen for the morning, more than watchmen for the morning.”
Sometimes all we can do is wait. Let us wait with the eyes of hope, as we strain to see light on the horizon, marking the dawn of a new day.
My love to you,
Pastor Jim
