Today’s Word from Pastor Jim…

One of the great joys of serving alongside the people of God at Trinity Lutheran Church is the privilege of hearing your stories, struggles, joys and sorrows. We rejoice with families as they welcome children or grandchildren into the world. We celebrate the lives of dear saints, small victories and lifetime achievements. Listening to each other and sharing our life stories has mostly given way to political posts and cat videos on Facebook. It’s not that I am not interested in seeing what you have for dinner every night, but perhaps there is more to life.

This past week I visited with a young woman who grew up at TLC and has now embarked on a new phase of her career. Her enthusiasm was apparent as she talked about the challenges ahead for her. I asked about the owner of the company she worked for, a woman of wealth, notoriety, and acclaim. Her response brought a smile to my face and lifted my spirits. “She is humble and kind.” Humble and kind. Humility and kindness. Those are among the greatest of all Christian attributes. Anyone who has really met Jesus should be humbled by the amazing grace of God. Anyone who follows Jesus should exhibit the same kindness that marked his life and ministry.

Which leads me to a Country Western song because all roads lead to a Country Western song. Tim McGraw made the song a country hit but the lyrics were written by Lori McKenna. Read them carefully, consider them prayerfully and join me in following Jesus. And when our life is over may they say, “she was loving and kind.”

One day closer,
Pastor Jim

“Humble and Kind”

You know there’s a light that glows by the front door
Don’t forget the key’s under the mat
When childhood stars shine
Always stay humble and kind

Go to church ‘cause your mamma says to
Visit grandpa every chance that you can
It won’t be wasted time
Always stay humble and kind

Hold the door, say “please,” say “thank you”
Don’t steal, don’t cheat, and don’t lie
I know you got mountains to climb
But always stay humble and kind

When the dreams you’re dreamin’ come to you
When the work you put in is realized
Let yourself feel the pride
But always stay humble and kind

Don’t expect a free ride from no one
Don’t hold a grudge or a chip and here’s why
Bitterness keeps you from flyin’
Always stay humble and kind

When it’s hot, eat a root beer popsicle
Shut off the AC and roll the windows down
Let the summer sun shine
Always stay humble and kind

Don’t take for granted the love this life gives you
When you get where you’re going don’t forget turn back around
And help the next one in line
Always stay humble and kind
