WELCA (Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America)

What is WELCA?

WELCA stands for Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. We are a part of  a national organization as well as a NW Synod WELCA group.

As a community of women created in the image of God, called to discipleship in Jesus Christ, and empowered by the Holy Spirit, we commit ourselves to grow in faith, affirm our gifts, support one another in our callings, engage in ministry and action, and promote healing and wholeness in the church, the society, and the world.

Membership: If you are a member of Trinity Lutheran and female or even if you are not a member of Trinity but are still interested in the program and purpose of WELCA, then guess what? You are automatically a member of WELCA. (And there aren’t even any dues!)

Currently Trinity’s WELCA is involved in:

• Organizing the Annual Holiday Bazaar

• Collecting soap for Lutheran World Relief

• Quilt making, assembling health and school kits that go to Lutheran World Relief and local needs.  (See the TLC Quilters page)

• Raising funds – primarily from the Bazaar – to support the Pastor’s Discretionary Fund, preschool and seminary scholarships, lots of local charities, and the larger WELCA organizations (Last year $11,000 was raised and given away!)

• Collecting change for Stand With Africa

• Supporting the “scrubby” making that Nora Josephson started and a group of ladies is continuing

• WELCA also serves one of the Lenten soup suppers and makes lefse, jam and other crafts for the Bazaar

• We could send delegates to the NW Synodical Women’s Organization and the churchwide Women’s Organization Triennial Convention

We meet 3 times a year (in addition to the Bazaar work) in Grigware Hall for luncheon get-togethers and to handle any business we might need to discuss.

There are elected board members. Serving currently are: Kathy Borson, President; Karen Forrester, VP; Susan Yarne, Treasurer; and Gloria Hartnett, Secretary

The National and NW Synod WELCA’s hold retreats and a Triennial Convention, which all women are invited to attend. They also serve as resources for bible study, justice issues (such as domestic violence), stewardship and discipleship information and action.
